Member of Pioneer Madison County Family Dies at Knoxville
Mrs. Mary Ray, member of a pioneer Madison county family died last Friday, Dec. 2 at Knoxville. She had been making her home there with her daughter, Mrs. Frank Schmidt, for the last four years. She was 87 years of age.
Mrs. Ray was the former Mary Luetta Beem, daughter of William and Amanda Heacock Beem. She was born in Scott township Sept. 11, 1862. She was married at Winterset on April 3, 1884 to Levi S. Ray. They farmed in Scott township for 10 years, then moved to a farm in South township where they lived for 45 years. In 1938, because of failing health, they moved into Winterset. Since the death of her husband in 1939, she had made her home with her children most of the time.
At an early age she united with the Elm Grove Methodist church maintaining membership there throughout her life.
Mrs. Ray was the mother of five children, the eldest of whom, Frank, died in 1922. Surviving are two sons, Fred J. Ray of Winterset and Carl Ray of St. Charles; and two daughters, Mrs. Schmidt of Knoxville and Mrs. Beulah Alcox of St. Charles. She also leaves two grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday from the Elm Grove church, in charge of the Rev. A. R. Weed of Tingley. Burial was made in the Sayre cemetery.
