MRS. ANNA MARTENS OF WINTERSET DIES

Native of Germany Had Lived in Madison County Since 1915

Mrs. Anna Martens, member of a well-known Madison county family, died at her home in Winterset Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the age of 84 years.

Mrs. Martens was a native of Germany, where she was born at Meldorf on May 20, 1872, a daughter of John and Weibka Selk Russ. As a baby she came to the United States with her parents, and her early life was spent at Martensdale.

She was married Sept. 2, 1891, to Frederick William Martens. They lived in Warren county until 1915, when they moved to Jefferson township in Madison county. They farmed south of DeSoto until retirement in 1944, when they moved into Winterset. Her husband died in 1948, after 56 years of marriage.

In early life she was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church, in which she was an active member through her life.

She is survived by seven sons, Louis W., Fred B., William E., Clarence H., Grant J. and Irvin W. Martens, all located on farms south of DeSoto, and Arthur O. Martens of Clarinda; a daughter, Mrs. Esther Storck of Winterset; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Miller of Winterset and Mrs. Lena Rusk of Hill City, Minn., two brothers, Louis Russ of Winterset and William Russ of Long Beach, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday from the Trinity Lutheran church in Jefferson township, conducted by the Rev. C. G. Meyer. Burial was made in the church cemetery there.
