JAMES PORTER, Winterset

James Martin Porter, 87, of Winterset died Dec. 2, 2006, at Winterset Care Center North.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 5, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery with military honors performed by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8142 and American Legion Post 184, both of Winterset.

James Porter was born Feb. 12, 1919, in rural Adair County to James David and Flora Fern (Fay) Porter. His marriage to Mary Anne Long took place Sept. 17, 1941, in Grant City, Mo. James was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps - 82nd Airborne. During his working career, he was employed by the DOT, as well as the Buckingham and Red Ball trucking companies. From 1960 to his retirement in 1979, James owned and managed the Porter Laundromat in Winterset.

He was preceded in death by one son, Larry Porter; four sisters, Ruth, Dorothy, Joy, and Ethel (in infancy); and two brothers, John and Cecil.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Anne, of Winterset; one daughter, Linda Dillinger of Bella Vista, Ark.; one son, David Porter of State Center; and nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Middle River Hospice in Winterset.
