DEATH OF MRS. JANE HARTSOOK

Mrs. Jane Hartsook, pioneer resident of Madison county, died at her home, south of Winterset Thursday, December 22, at the age of 86 years. She had been in poor helth for some time, and the death of her brother Calvin Blythe last week made her condition worse.

Mrs. Hartsook was born in West Moreland County, Pennsylvania, October 1, 1946. When she was five years old her parents moved to Iowa, locating near Mt. Pleasant. In 1856 the family moved to Madison county and settled near Kasson in Monroe township. This has been her home township for 76 years.

In 1864 when she married Benjamin Hartsook, he took his bride to his mother's home to live, the home being a log cabin, located a few feet from the present home, where death took her, after a continuous residence of 68 years on the one farm.

The Harsooks were the parents of three sons, W. E., Frank and Elmer. The eldest son, W. E. died in August 1931. In addition to her two sons, she leaves a daughter-in-law, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mr. Hartsook died in 1874 when her youngest son Elmer was only six months and the eldest Billie was eight years. Mrs. Hartsook and her mother-in-law raised the three boys, and their affection for one another was said to be like the Bible story of Naomi and Ruth.

For years she and her brother Cal were the only surviving members of the pioneer family, the Blythes.

Aunt Jane as she was familiarly known was a happy woman. All who entered her home found a welcome and shared her happiness. Her busy hands filled each hour with interest, and in planning things for her sons.

The Rev. A. P. Keast conducted her funeral services at the Fellowship church, southwest of Winterset, and burial was in the Hamblin cemetery.
