St. Charles’ Last Survivor of The Civil War Dies

St. Charles Special, March 10 – George H. Cheek of St. Charles, who had been spending the winter in Omaha with his son, Luther Cheek, died in an Omaha hospital last week. The body was brought back to St. Charles, and funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, March 10, at the Church of Christ. Burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery, southwest of the town.

Mr. Cheek was the last surviving veteran of the Civil War from St. Charles, and John Miller Post, G. A. R. He was born in Adair county, Kentucky, February 18, 1838, and enlisted and served during the Civil War. He was married and came to this county in 1870. He was a charter member of Model Lodge, No. 315, A. F. & A. M. which was instituted April 8, 1872. He joined the Masonic lodge, at Edmonton, Kentucky, in March, 1866, so had been a member of the order for 65 years.

Mrs. Cheek died a few years ago, and since that time has resided with his son, V. Bird Cheek, in St. Charles during the summer, and another son, Luther, during the winter months.

He leaves these two sons, and a grandson, George Cheek, Jr., of Kentucky.

News of Madison County - St. Charles

George H. Cheek, father of Bird Cheek of our city, died in a hospital in Omaha Saturday. His body will be brought to St. Charles for burial.

He has been with his other son, Luther, and wife in Omaha, since last fall. He was 93 years old and leaves two sons, his wife having passed on a few years ago.
