Wednesday, May 26, 1920Death of Mrs. R. W. STEWART
Mrs. R. W. Stewart, one of the oldest settlers in Jackson township, died at her home ten miles northwest of Winterset on last Friday, May 23, 1920, at the age of 87 years. The funeral, which was held on Monday, was one of the largest ever held in that communnity, and attests the esteem and love for this estimable woman, whose residence dates back to the year 1860.
The Stewart home was a home in every sense of the word. Hospitality and good cheer were genuine. There are but few people in that community who will not feel a personal loss in the death of "Aunt Kate" Stewart, and who will not cherish a fond memory of her helpful, unselfish life.
Surviving members of the family are three sons: W. R., O. L. and Bert; and one daughter, Mrs. Grace Bissell, all residing in this county.

The last page of an earth life has been turned: another of Gods faithful ones has been called home.
Catherine Hake entered this life Jan. 11, 1833 in Dover, Pa., and passed to the life eternal May 23, 1920, thus closing a long life of usefulness and devotion at the age of 81 years, 4 months and 12 days. At the age of three years, in company with her parents, she moved to Niles in Trumbull county, Ohio, where she resided until Jan. 23, 1858, when she was united in marriage with Robert Wilson Stewart at Warren, Ohio. In the spring of 1860, they came west, settling on a farm one half mile west of the present old home, where they endured the privations of those days.
There came to enrich this happy pioneer home, these children: Ida and Mary, who died in infancy; Will, who resides in Scott township, Etta, mother of Mac Junkin, who died in 1894; Walter, who died in 1902; Bert who lives on the old home place; Oll, a resident of Madison county near Barney; and Grace, the wife of E. E. Bissell. Three grandchildren: Mac Junkin, whom she mothered since babyhood because of the death of his mother; Walter and Bernice, children of Will Stewart; and two little great grandchildren, Janice and Judith Junkin, all were given a generous share of grandmother's love and devotion.
Her passing also leaves a devoted sister, Mrs. Sally Phillips, with whom she has enjoyed an intimate companionship, as they have lived side by side for 56 years, a happy and unusual privilege. She also leaves, two brothers; Eli Hake of Girard, Ohio, and Valentine Hake of Jackson Center, Pa. Of a family of six girls and six boys, the last three named are left of the children of Samuel and Elizabeth Hake.
The happy union formed by the marriage of Robert and Catherine Stewart, was broken by the death of the husband and father, July 28, 1914, since which time she has continued to reside in the old home with her son, Bert, until health compelled the change to the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. E. Bissell, whose devotion, together with that of every member in the family has been beautiful.
Mrs. Stewart was a birthright member of the Dutch Reformed church, and during her early life was given the care and training of devoted parents, coming into this community as she did in 1860, she cast her lot with the Church of Christ when it was organized in 1865, thus becoming a charter member of the present church at Early Chapel, one faithful in every relation touching the church work, regardless of failing health.
During the 60 years of continuous residence in this community, she has ever been a loyal friend, a helpful neighbor, and a wonderfully devoted and loving mother, counting no sacrifice too great, as she followed in the footsteps of
Christ.Funeral services at the Bissell home, Monday at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. Girdner, followed by a drive to the Penn Center cemetery, where all that was mortal of Mother was tenderly laid away beside her loved ones.
