Well Known Stockman Killed Near Indianola When Car Leaves Grade

D. T. Miles was killed about 4:30 p.m. last Thursday when his Buick car left the grade and plunged over a fifteen foot embankment, five miles west and one half mile north of Indianola.

Mr. Miles left Winterset Thursday afternoon, stopping at Patterson to visit his sister, Mrs. Brown. About 4:30 p.m. in the afternoon, Mrs. Butler, near whose home the accident occurred, saw Mr. Miles pass. A little daughter, who passed the spot on the way home from school, told her parents late in the evening that she saw a car lying at the bottom of the grade but the parents believed her to be mistaken and made no investigation until the next morning. It was then that Mr. Miles' body was found beneath the car. His chest was crushed by the steering wheel and his head was severely bruised and it is not believed that he could have lived but a brief time after the injury. The car did not leave the embankment at a high rate of speed, since it lay opposite the place where it left the roadway. The wheel marks indicated that the brakes were working on one wheel only and this may have caused the car to swerve.

Mr. Butler, who was the first at the scene of the accident, notified the Warren county authorities. An inquest was held and the findings were as above indicated.

Mr. Miles, who for many years was a prominent stock buyer, was well known throughout the county. He had lived in Madison county for about forty years, moving here from Patterson to give his time exclusively to the business of stock shipping.

Surviving member of the family are three sons; B. B. Miles of Ottumwa, Bruce and Blaine of Winterset; three daughters: Mrs. Nelson Smith of Winterset, Mrs. May Emery of Ottumwa and Mrs. Mary McClurg of Des Moines.

Daniel T. Miles was born near Plymouth, Ind., on May 15, 1854 and died on Oct. 27, 1921, being 67 years, 5 months and 12 days of age at the time of his departure. While yet a boy, he came with his parents to Polk county, Iowa, and later moved to Madison county, where he spent the last 48 years of his life.

On Dec. 14, 1881 he was united in marriage to Jessie Bird at Patterson. To this union six children were born, all of whom survive. They are: Bird Miles and Mrs. E. H. He was a devoted husband and father, always making the welfare of his family his first consideration. His business associates found in him a soul of integrity.

He united with the Church of Christ about 40 years ago, and lived loyal to his profession, always using his influence to keep the children in the church and Sunday school, and was always ready to give any good cause his financial support.

Being active in life until the time of his death, he will be greatly missed in the town and community.

He leaves to hold him in cherished memory the companion, six children, one sister, Mrs. Martha Brown of Patterson, seven grandchildren and a large circle of friends.

Funeral services were held from the home Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. E. B. Chancellor. Burial was in Winterset cemetery.
