Obituary

HAYS—Died in Douglas township, Madison county, Iowa, August 15, 1890, Lena Ethel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Hays. Aged one year, eleven months, and seventeen days.

This bright little girl was taken suddenly with flux, terminating in inflammation of the bowels and the brain after nine days of severe sickness and much suffering, attended by the fond and loving care of the parents, relatives, neighbors, and faithful aid of the physicians. The little body was released from pain by death’s messenger. Oh, what a dark shadow thrown across the path of early wedded life is this deep affliction and bereavement, in the loss of the first born and only child. True, none but a parent who has had the experience can realize this deep sorrow it brings, there is a bright ray of sunlight and joy, in the words of the Savior who has said: “Suffer the little children to come unto me, for of each is the Kingdom of Heaven.

On the following day the little body was conveyed to the Worthington cemetery, followed by the bereaved parents, relatives and many of the kind neighbors. The funeral services were conducted in the church which was filled with sympathizing friends of the community, solemnly paying their last tribute of respect to the departed child, and all that was mortal was laid in the tomb, the silent home of the dead.
