JOHN E. SCHWANER DIED HERE MONDAY

Veteran Winterset Business Man Was Critically Ill Several Weeks

John E. Schwaner, well known Winterset business man, died at the local hospital Monday morning, Jan. 4, after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Schwaner who was 71 years of age, had been in apparent good health until two weeks ago, when he became ill with heart trouble. On New Year's morning, his condition become more serious, and he was taken to the hospital, and death came three days later.

A son of pioneer Winterset residents, Mr. Schwaner had always made his home in Winterset. Upon the completion of his school work here, he attended business school in Burlington, and returned and entered the harness shop which was then owned by his father, C. C. Schwaner. He became a partner and after the death of his father in 1904 he continued with the business. A long time member of the state association of harness dealers, he had served as secretary-treasurer of the organization for the past 25 years. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian church and the Masonic lodge.

Mr. Schwaner was a son of Christian C. and Katherine Schowalter Schwaner. His parents came here by covered wagon from Keokuk in 1869. On November 14, 1899 he was married to Miss Bess Shannon and for the past 25 years they have resided in the Schwaner home on West Court avenue. In later years he had devoted much of his time to his yard and flower garden, and his iris, peonies, and other flowers have been of the choicest varieties.

He is survived by his wife, who has also been ill and was in the local hospital at the time of his death, and a sister, Mrs. Walter Kolasa of Berkeley, Calif., who was here at the time of his death. His parents, and two brothers, Will and Dr. Rolla Schwaner had preceded him in death. He also leaves three nephews and two nieces, Albert Schwaner of Peedmont, Calif., John Schwaner, who owns a C.P.T. airfield in Nevada, Walter Kolasa, Jr., of Berkeley, Calif., Mrs. Clinton Wilson of Los Angeles, and Catherine Kolasa of Berkeley.

The Rev. Arthur Mortenson conducted his funeral services at the Anderson home for funerals this afternoon at 2 o'clock and burial was made in the Winterset cemetery. The pallbearers were J. W. McKee, Dr. J. W. Bunker, Burns Pace, Alf Danforth, Sherman Baker, and Oliver James.

JOHN SCHWANER DIED AT AGE 71

Last Rites Held Wednesday Afternoon. Interment At Winterset

John Edward Schwaner, lifetime resident and business man of Winterset, died at his home here Monday. He was 71 years of age.

Funeral services were held Wednesday from the Anderson funeral home, with Rev. Arthur Mortenson, pastor of the Presbyterian church in charge. Interment was made in the Winterset cemetery.

John Edward Schwaner was born in Winterset, Sept. 17, 1872, the son of Christian C. and Catherine Schwaner. He attended the Winterset schools and was married to Bessie E. Shannon, Nov. 14, 1899.

His father was one of the pioneer business men of Winterset, having owned and operated a harness shop. Following the death of his father, he took over the management of the business which is located at 104 E. Court Ave. He had charge of it right up to the time of his death.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Walter Kolasa of Berkeley, Calif., three nephews, and two nieces.
