Wisconsin Rites For Former Resident

Funeral services for Sister Mary Juanita Kiernan, 79 of La Cross, Wis., were held Saturday, May 19 at 10 a.m. in the chapel of St. Rose Convent in LaCrosse, with the Reverend James Kiernan celebrating the Mass. Burial was at the LaCrosse cemetery.

Sister Juanita died May 16 at Villa St. Joseph in LaCrosse.

The daughter of James and Elizabeth Ryan Kiernan, she was born Mary Rose Kiernan on April 5, 1900 on the Kiernan farm in Madison County. She attended rural School No. 5 in Lee township, and St. Angela's Academy for young women in Carroll Iowa.

She entered the Order of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration La Crosse, Wisconsin on August 30, 1920. Her profession of vows took place on June 22, 1924, and were solemnized on June 21, 1930. She celebrated her golden jubilee as a religious in the summer of 1974. She taught mostly second and third grades for 58 years in parochial schools in Iowa, Wisconsin and Washington.

Sister Juanita was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Elizabeth and Margaret, and four brothers, Peter, James Tom and John.

Survivors include two sisters, Frances Doty of LaJolla, Calif. and Lenore Schulte of Coral Gables, Fla., 12 nephews and two nieces, including Gary and Joan Kiernan of Jefferson Township.
