Wednesday, January 12, 1944Mrs. Sarah Cox, well-known Winterset and Madison county resident, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. L. Newton early Tuesday, Jan. 11. Mrs. Cox, who was 83 years of age, had been in apparent good health, until last Saturday when she became ill. Her condition was not regarded as serious, but death came at 2 a.m. Tuesday.
Mrs. Cox was a daughter of James and Elizabeth Reed. She was born in Jackson county, July 14, 1860, and had came to this county with her parents when she was a girl 12 years of age. They located in the Fairview neighborhood and she was married to F. M. Cox.
They continued to make their home on a farm until 1919 when they moved to the house on West Jefferson, which has since been her home. Mr. Cox died in 1936. Two daughters also preceded the mother in death, Ethel, who died in 1930, and a daughter, in infancy.
Mr. Cox is survived by four children: Mrs. Don Ward of Ogden, Utah, Boyd Cox of Safe, Missouri, and Charles and Mrs. C. L. Newton of Winterset. She also leaves 12 grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren, and a brother and sister, Gus Reed of Jackson township and Mrs. Matilda Hildebrand of Winterset.
The Rev. Walter A. Samp, pastor of the Methodist church will conduct her funeral services at the church Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. and burial will be made in the Fairview cemetery.

Mrs. Sarah R. Cox, resident of this county since 1874, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. L. Newton, on Tuesday, January 11, following an illness lasting two days. She was 83 years old.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 14, in the Methodist church with Rev. W. A. Samp in charge. Interment was made in the Winterset cemetery.
Sarah Jane Reed, daughter of James and Eliza Reed, was born July 14, 1860, near Andrew, Jackson county, Iowa. When 14 years of age became with her parents to Madison county and located in Jefferson township near the Fairview church, where she grew to womanhood.
At the age of 12 years she united with the United Presbyterian church.
She was united in marriage to F. M. Cox on April 2, 1883, and to this union were born six children, Francis Leona who died in infancy, and ethyl who died on November 15, 1930.
Shortly after her marriage she transferred her membership to the Methodist church of which she remained a faithful an active member until her death. She was a member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, and was interested in missionary work. She possessed a remarkable ability in remembering dates and names.
She is survived by four children, Charles R. Cox of Winterset, Mrs. Vena Ward of Ogden, Utah; Mrs. Eva Newton of Winterset, and Boyd V. Cox of Safe, Missouri; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, S. G. Reed of Madison Township; a sister, Mrs. Matilda Hildebrand of Winterset; and other relatives.
