VERNON CLARK Died Friday

F. Vernon Clark of Winterset, former assistant Madison county engineer, died last Friday, Dec. 18, 1970, at Madison Manor, after a long peiod of failing health. He was 68 years of age.

Mr. Clark had been a resident of Winterset practically all his life. He was born here Nov. 28, 1902, a son of Joel B. and Hannah E. Chapman Clark. He attended Winterset High school, where he was an outstanding athlete in football graduating with the class of 1921.

As a young man he was employed by the United Food store in Winterset and managed one of that firm's stores in Colfax for a period.

In 1938 he returned to Winterset to serve as assistant county engineer, a position he held until his retirement in 1961.

He was active in the Iowa National Guard over a period of years, serving as first sergeant of Winterset's 67th Infantry brigade headquarters company.

He was a member of the First Christian church of Winterset. He was past master of the Masonic order here, past patron of the Order of Eastern Star, and member of the Shrine. He was a charter member of the Winterset Kiwanis.

Mr. Clark was married June 1, 1924, at Nevada, to Myrtle Cessna of Winterset. They were parents of one daughter, Janice, now Mrs. R. G. Peebler of Des Moines.

He is survived by his wife and daughter; three grandchildren; and a brother. C. Orval Clark of Des Moines.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday from the First Christian church in Winterset, with the pastor, the Rev. E. E. Jandebeur officiating. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery, with Masonic ritual.
