Death of Mrs. Ellen Dabney

Mrs. Ellen A. Dabney, a pioneer resident of Madison county died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sam C. Smith, Wednesday evening, July 29th, about 5:30 o’clock after an extended illness. She was 77 years of age, and was born and raised in Crawford township. Aaron and Margaret Howell were her parents. She was married to John Dabney and they continued to make their home in this county. Mr. Dabney died however, in 1902 and since that time, his widow lived part of the time in Winterset, and part of the time, in California, near two of her daughters.

Five children mourn her loss (unreadable) Smith of Winterset, Mrs. Charles L. Childers of El Centro, Mrs. Charles T. Shearer of Los Angeles, and Mrs. Oscar Muir of Indianapolis. Her three daughters, who live out of the state came here several weeks ago, to be with their mother, and all the children were with her at the time of her death.

Definite funeral arrangements had not yet been made, when the Madisonian went to press, Wednesday evening.

HOLD FINAL RITES FOR MRS. ELLEN DABNEY

Services For Madison County Pioneer Were Held Friday

Funeral services for Mrs. Ellen A. Dabney were held Friday afternoon at 4 o’clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sam C. Smith. Mrs. Dabney has been ill for some time and passed away Wednesday evening, July 29th. She was past 77 years of age at the time of her death.

The funeral services were conducted by the Reverend A. P. Keast, of the Methodist church. Pall bearers were Dr. R. S. Cooper, F. P. Hartsook, John Schwaner, L. L. Blomgren, W. S. Cooper and Jas. A. Smith of Des Moines. Those having charge of the flowers were Mrs. Dale Bond, Mrs. Oliver James, Miss Bernice Wilkinson, Miss Florence Smith, Miss Vera Dabney and, Miss Helen Wilkinson. Music was furnished by a quartet, Dr. R. S. Cooper, J. Robert Cornell, Mrs. F. P. Hartsook and Mrs. Dale Bond. Miss Bernice Wilkinson accompanied them at the piano.

An account of her life is as follows:

Ellen A., daughter of Aaron and Margaret Howell was born in Crawford township, Madison county, Iowa, November 27, 1853. She passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sam C. Smith in Winterset, Iowa, on July 29, 1931, at the age of 77 years, eight months and two days.

She was married to John W. Dabney on September 21, 1872. Mr. and Mrs. Dabney established their home in Douglas township Madison county. There they resided for 29 years, moving to Winterset in 1901. Mr. Dabney died in November 1902.

Their marriage was blessed with six children, five of whom are living. They are Gaylord H. Dabney, and Mrs. Sam C. Smith of Winterset, Mrs. Charles T. Shearer of Los Angeles, Mrs. Oscar R. Muir of Indianapolis and Mrs. Charles L. Childers of El Centro, California, all of whom were with their mother during her last illness.

Mrs. Dabney united with the Methodist church when 12 years of age and during all of her life gave loyal devotion to her church and a beautiful exemplition of her faith in her daily life.
