Eldred Farlow, the 23 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Farlow, died at the Winterset hospital late Wednesday afternoon, July 22nd. Eldred became seriously ill with pneumonia, last Friday, and he was taken to the hospital, but his condition has been critical, from the first. An oxygen machine was brought here, yesterday, and everything possible, was done, to save the youth, but he died shortly after four o’clock.

Eldred has always made his home here. He was born in August, 1907, and attended the local schools. He was graduated from the Winterset high school in 1925, and attended the Iowa State College at Ames, for several years. He was principal of the Randall high school for two years, and for the past two years, has been studying medicine at the State University of Iowa, at Iowa City. This summer, he has been assisting his father, who owns the Standard Vulcanizing company.

The boy was liked by everyone here, and he was doing exceptionally well in his school work. The community will sorrow with his parents, and other relatives. The boy is survived by his parents, his grandfather, Alf Cox, and his grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Farlow and several aunts and uncles.

Funeral arrangements had not yet been made, when the Madisonian went to press, Wednesday night.

Eldred Farlow

Eldred Farlow, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Welba Farlow, was born at Winterset, August 20, 1907, and died at Winterset July 22, 1931, at the local hospital after a brief illness of six days.

As a boy he attended the Winterset grade and high schools where he made not only a good rank as a student, but also held an enviable record for regularity and attendance, not being absent nor tardy in twelve years. Graduating from the Winterset high school at Winterset in 1925, he entered Iowa State College at Ames; after doing two years work there he became principal of the schools at Randall. Completing his work at Ames he entered medical school of the Iowa State University at Iowa City where he had completed two years work toward his degree. He was a member of the Phi Chi Medical Fraternity at Iowa City.

When but a boy of tender years Eldred became a follower of Jesus Christ, was a true Christian, and the spirit of his Saviour evidenced itself in all the affairs of his life, producing a character which was loving, dependable, clean and true. On March 28, 1920, he joined the Baptist church here, where he held his membership up to the time of his death. The members of the church and its pastor feel keenly the loss of this young life.

Besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Welba Farlow, his grandparents, Mr. Alf Cox and Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Farlow, he also leaves several aunts and uncles, and a host of friends, all of whom mourn the loss of such a bright and promising young life.

The funeral services were held at the Baptist church at 4:30 o’clock Friday, July 24th, with the Rev. John T. Hall in charge and Rev. Paul Main Fowler assisting. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
