Michael Gamble

Michael Gamble, the son of Robert and Margaret Gamble was born in Muskingum County, Ohio, on May 1, 1844. He died at the home of his son Anderson Gamble, M. D. in Madrid, Iowa, the evening of October 30, 1931, aged 87 years.

He came to Iowa with his parents when a lad of ten years in 1854. The early home was in Crawford township, Madison county. His parents were charter members of the Mount Pelier (Montpelier) church, the first organized congregation of Madison county. In early responsible boyhood he professed his faith in Christ and united with that old congregation.

On March 10, 1870 he married Miss Esther McLees. Their marriage vows were taken before Rev. C. T. McCaughan then in his early ministry, later venerated and affectionately named “Father McCaughan.” The first forty-two years of married life was spent on the farm north of Patterson. In 1912 they came to Winterset. With their family and friends they celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary March 10, 1930. They more quietly noticed the sixty-first anniversary last March.

God blessed the home with two daughters and one son: Mrs. Loretta Milford, wife of the Reverend M. M. Milford, pastor of the United Presbyterian church of Viola, Kansas; Mrs. Jesse Emma Gibson, wife of the Reverend R. C. Gibson, D. D., pastor of the Sixth United Presbyterian church of Chicago and Anderson Gamble, M. D. of Madrid, Iowa. There is one grandson, Frank Lester Gibson of Chicago and Monmouth College.

Mr. Gamble was the last survivor of a large family. When his sister, Mrs. Elizabeth McMichael, preceded him to the heavenly City some months ago he openly spoke of his expectation and desire to hear the Lord’s call soon. When so unexpectedly bereft of his loving and capable wife on July 13th, this year he said, “My heart is sore, just so sore, but we cannot be absent long. God will call me.” The loving Redeemer has now fulfilled beyond the letter the tender wish of his heart.

His life was marked by industry, faith, success. He was a citizen and a soldier whose worth is the rock foundation of our nation.
