Maynard L. Harper, Winterset

Maynard (Poppy) Leo Harper, Jr., 70, died from complications of a stroke Feb. 13, 2001 at Winterset Care Center South.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 17, at Collins Oak Park Chapek in Winterset with Pastor Dennis Sheppard officiating. Burial was at Peru cemetery with military rites performed by American Legion Post 184 and V.F.W. Post 8142.

Poppy Harper was born Sept. 25, 1930 in Madison County to Maynard Leo Sr. and Sarah Phyllis (Foley) Harper. A lifetime resident of Madison County he married Doris Pauline Ross on Dec. 26, 1951 in St. Marys. Maynard was a retired heavy equipment operator for Carl Henry Construction. A Marine Corps veteran of the Korean conflict, he was a member of the Coon Hunter's Association and Immaculate Conception Church in St. Marys.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a granddaughter.

He is survived by his wife of Peru; four sons, Maynard Harper III (wife Nancy) of Thornton, Colo., and W. Lee Harper, Patrick Harper and John Harper (wife Julia), all of Peru; a daughter, Mary Belleu (husband Mark) of New Virginia; a brother, Bill Harper (wife Dorothy) of Peru; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
