Mrs. Michael Gamble Dies

Mrs. Michael Gamble passed away at her home at 217 East South street Monday afternoon July 13th, about 2 o’clock. Mrs. Gamble had been ill but a few days. She became ill a week ago but was better Sunday. Sunday night she became worse but her condition was not thought to be serious. Death came Tuesday afternoon while she was sleeping. She was 79 years of age.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the home at two o’clock and at the United Presbyterian church at 2:30 o’clock. Burial was in the Winterset cemetery.

Mrs. Gamble is survived by her husband Michael Gamble, two daughters, Mrs. M. M. Milford of Viola, Kansas; Mrs. J. C. Gibson of Chicago, and one son, Dr. Anderson Gamble of Madrid. She is also survived by one grandson, Frank Gibson of Chicago, a brother and sister Mrs. Tom Hunter of Winterset and Anderson McLees of Sanborn, North Dakota.

Mrs. Gamble was born in Jefferson county, Ohio, January 30, 1852, a daughter of Anderson and Sarah McKinney McLees. In 1854 the family moved to Iowa, settling in Crawford township, Madison county. Her father was a charter member of the Montpelier United Presbyterian church.

On March 10th, 1870 Mr. and Mrs. Gamble were united in marriage. They celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary on the tenth of March last year.

Mrs. Gamble has been a member of the United Presbyterian church since childhood joining at Patterson while Rev. C. T. McCaughan was pastor. She was a member of the W. R. C. and W. C. T. U. and took a great interest in the work of both organizations. Mrs. Gamble has been a member of the latter organization for over 20 years, joining when it was organized the second time.

Mr. and Mrs. Gamble moved to Winterset in March 1912.

LAST RITES HELD MRS. M. GAMBLE

Wednesday Afternoon, Had lived In Madison County Seventy-Seven Years

Mrs. Michael Gamble, 79, one of the pioneers of Madison county, died Monday afternoon at her home in Winterset. She had been in feeble health some time. The Rev. W. C. Porter, pastor of the United Presbyterian Church, conducted short services at the home at two o’clock Wednesday afternoon followed by services at 2:30 at the church; burial in the Winterset cemetery.

Mrs. Gamble was Miss Esther McLees, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anderson McLees, Irish immigrants, and was born in Jefferson county, Ohio, January 30, 1852. The family moved to Iowa when Mrs. Gamble was two years old, coming by River to Keokuk and settling in Crawford township, Madison county. Mr. McLees was one of the well-known men of early days and took a prominent part in the affairs of the county. He was one of the charter members of the Montpelier United Presbyterian church in Crawford. His death occurred in 1902, Mrs. McLees dying in 1910.

The Robert Gamble family came to Iowa from Ohio in 1854 and were near neighbors of the McLees family. The marriage of his son, Michael Gamble, and Miss McLees Took Pl., March 10, 1870, the Rev. Dr. C. T. McCaughan performing the ceremony. Three children were born to them, Mrs. M. M. Milford of Chicago; Mrs. R. C. Gibson of Viola, Kansas; and Dr. R. C. Gamble of Madrid.

Mr. and Mrs. Gamble made their home in Crawford township until 1912 when they moved to Winterset. In March the couple observed the sixty-first anniversary of their marriage. Mrs. Gamble was active in the work of her church and the missionary society and was a member of the W. R. C.

Mr. Gamble survives as do her three children, Mrs. T. B. Hunter is a sister, Mrs. L. L. Wade a niece and Ralph McLees a nephew. A brother Anderson McLees, lives at Sanborn, North Dakota.
