GEORGE HANN DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS

Well Known Resident of Madison County, Died at Winterset Home, Saturday, Sept. 3

George Hann, life long resident of Madison county, died at his home on East Jefferson street, Saturday afternoon, September 3, after an extended illness. Mr. Hann who was 73 years of age, was born in Walnut township, and with the exception of a few years spent in travel spent his entire life in that township and in Winterset. For the past three years he has been in poor health.

Hugh and Sarah Hann were his parents, and they were identified with the first church in Walnut township, which was also one of the first churches in the county. After attending the Walnut township schools, Mr. Hann was a successful school teacher, in Scott and Walnut townships. He joined the Methodist church, at what is known as the Old Bethel Church, under the pastorate of Rev. Mr. Preston and has been active in church work since that time. He helped to build the Methodist church in Peru, and served as superintendent of the Sunday school. The Hanns moved to Winterset 15 years ago and lived for a short time in what is now known as the Ray Eyerly home. Fourteen years ago they bought the Wintrode house on East Jefferson and this place has since been their home. Since coming to Winterset he has been a member of the official board of the local church.

On November 9, 1883, he was married to Miss Mary Gillespie who died in June 1898. They were the parents of three children: Clyde of Mission, South Dakota; Bessie Thomas of Lincoln and May Travis, who died September 27, 1909. On June 4, 1902, he was married to Miss Myrtle Lane who died October 20, 1917. They were the parents of two children, Norma Greenfield of Earlham and Paul Hann of North Salem, New Hampshire.

He was married to Miss Lillian McClelland of Excelsior Springs, September 20, 1919. She survives him. He also leaves four children, five grandchildren, Harold Travis, Dale and Gerald Thomas, Pauline and Arlene Hann. One sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Welch and four brothers, Smith, Jim, John and Frank Hann of Winterset also survive him.

The Rev. A. P. Keast conducted his funeral services, held at the Methodist church, Monday, September 5th at 2 o'clock. John L. Hillman, president of Simpson college and a friend of Paul Hann assisted with the services. Burial was in the Peru cemetery.
