Walter Hamner, 97, died of cancer Aug. 6, 1999, at Winterset Care Center South.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 9, at Collins Funeral Home in Winterset with the Rev. Bill Branson officiating. Burial was in Winterset Cemetery, with military graveside services presented by American Legion Post 194 and VFW Post 8142 of Winterset.

Walter Hamner was born Dec. 17, 1901 in Madison County to David Edward and Elizabeth Bewll (Robertson) Hamner. A lifelong resident of Madison County, he married the former Esther Schrader on Dec. 29, 1941. He was a World War II Navy veteran, and had been employed with the United States Post Office, retiring in 1967. Walter also was a member of American Legion Post 184 and the First Christian Church in Winterset.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters.

He is survived by his wife of Winterset.
