Obituary

Opal Neoma Sheets Wheeldon, 78 years, two months, 15 days, daughter of Charles and Cora Ellen Sheets, was born September 10, 1899 in Dallas county. On August 19, 1916, she was united in marriage to Morris Hershel Wheeldon. To this couple came her children, Ralph Wheeldon of DeSoto, Dorothy Stanley of Earlham, Marie Jay of Tustin, California, Richard Wheeldon of Earlham, Betty Boyd of Earlham, Jean Boots of Atlantic, Mary Travis of Westminster, California and Ellen Thompson of Lorimor.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, husband, and son Bobby, of Alba, New Mexico. Opal’s early life was spent around Booneville and Van Meter; later in Stuart and Earlham. At the time of her death, November 25, she was living in the Madison Manor Nursing Home in Winterset.

Opal’s life was filled with her family. She came from a large family, three sisters and four brothers, and with her own children came 24 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. The love she showed and gave so easily was Opal’s greatest asset. She was always there when anyone needed her to take care of a sick child or other children when a new baby was on the way. The easiest words for us all to say were “Mom, can you come help me?” And she was always there.

She enjoyed music and played the piano by ear, as she couldn’t read music. Her favorites were the old gospel songs, of which she sang quite a few. She leaves behind many relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, November 28, at the Fisher funeral home in Van Meter. Pastor Glenn Moore officiated. Grandsons acted as pall bearers: Rodney Boyd, Richard Wheeldon, Jr., Steve Boots, Jody Thompson, Joe College and Charles Wheeldon. Interment was in the Booneville cemetery.
