Winterset Madisonian - June 11, 1925

Bert Bullock, one of the leading business men of Lorimor for many years, died on Friday, at the age of 53 years. He had been in poor health for several years, and on that account was forced to retire from active business.

Mr. Bullock, who was a son of Sarah M. Bullock, was born in Monroe township in 1871. About 15 years ago he moved to Lorimor to engage in business.

He leaves a wife, Mrs. Lucy Callison Bullock and one son, Gailen, aged 25.

Funeral services were held Sunday at Lorimor and burial made at the Clark cemetery near the old home in Monroe township. The Masonic order, of which he was an honored member, conducted the ritual service at the grave.

Again bereavement came to the people of Lorimor and vicinity, this time by the death of one of our highly esteemed and worthy citizens, Bert Bullock, on Friday evening, June 5 about 9:30. Death was not altogether a great surprise to his friends who knew of his condition during the past six months, yet it came to them with a hard blow.

The funeral which took place Sunday was one of the largest that has been held in Lorimor and his many friends which he had won throughout the country paid no heed to distance and disadvantages which they may have encountered and came many miles to pay their last respects. After the services, a procession extending over a mile proceeded to the Clark cemetery in Madison county where the deceased was laid to rest.

Elbert Bullock, son of Manville and Sarah Bullock, was born in Monroe township, Madison county, Iowa, on August 22, 1871. His one brother died in infancy, leaving him the only child of his parents. He grew to manhood on the old home place.

On October 6, 1899, he was united in marriage to Miss Lucy B. Callison, a union which has proved an exceptionally happy and congenial one, blessed by one child, a much loved son, Galyn.

About ten years later they made Lorimor their home and he became identified with the business interests of the town, in time coming to be known as one of its most prominent and popular citizens. About five years ago he became the proprietor of the Park hotel, a business for which he was peculiarly well fitted, his genial disposition and faculty of making his patrons feel at home having added many of them to his already large circle of friends. For several years, failing health has been a handicap which with his usual cheerfulness he carried without complaint, so that few of even his intimate friends realized his condition. But when a few months ago it became evident that the disease was making rapid progress, he was taken to a Des Moines sanitarium that he might have expert medical treatment. About five weeks ago, he came home apparently somewhat improved in health and hopes were entertained that he might become much stronger, but in spite of the most devoted care by his wife, son Galyn and friends he soon began to fail rapidly and on the evening of June 5th, his great unselfish heart, of which it has often been said that it was “as big as his body” was stilled and the tired body which had become so frail, was at rest.

Bert, as he was familiarly and affectionately called by everyone, was one of Nature’s Noblemen. In his character there was not a mean or selfish trait. A great faith in God and his fellowmen, intense loyalty to friends and the most tender care and thoughtfulness for his loved ones, were strong features of his character. He was prominent in Masonic circles, having been for twenty-five years a loyal and consistent member of Fern lodge, No. 558 A.F. & A.M., serving for the year as Worshipful Master, and was a Past Patron of Venus Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. He was a member of Des Moines Consistory, Scottish Rite Masons, thirty-second degree, also a member of the Shrine. He lived the brotherhood he had instigated in getting with these --------. No appeal for help or sympathy was ever made to him in vain. This unselfish devotion to the ------ of others has won for him an endearing place in the hearts of an unusually large circle of friends who will unite with his sorrowing family in mourning his passing on before. He was not much past middle age, being at the time of his death, but 53 years, 9 months and 12 days old. The immediate members of his family are his wife, the son, Galyn C., and a little grandson, Galyn.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Lorimor Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. O. E. Cooley. Beautiful Masonic services were conducted at the graveside by Thomas Beaumont of Creston, assisted by the members of Fern lodge A.F. & A.M. of Lorimor.
