Christena Mary Garbel was born on Dec. 21, 1849 in Baden, Germany, where she lived until she was 19 years old. She then came to this country with her parents, settling in Illinois. On Dec. 20, 1871, she was married to George R. Freeman. In 1876 they moved to Madison county, where she spent most of her life. To this union were born four children; Lyra M. Forbes of Winterset, Clara J. Leonard of South Sioux City, Nebr.; William E. of Colfax and Charles C. of Sioux City.
She departed this life at the home of her daughter in South Sioux City, May 23, 1923 at the age of 73 years, 4 months and 2 days. The husband preceded her Feb. 6, 1910. As a girl she was a member of the German Lutheran church, but after coming to this country, had no preference and attended church where it was most convenient.
Those left to mourn her loss are her four children, fifteen grandchildren, two sisters and one brother in Illinois, besides a host of other relatives and friends.
Burial was at Union Chapel, where services were conducted by Rev. E. B. Chancellor, Saturday morning at 11 o'clock.
