Mrs. Kirk Fox, the former Virgie Abrahams, died at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, after a brief illness. She was 80 years old.
Mrs. Fox was born near Hanley, Iowa, on March 9, 1889, the eldest daughter of Julia Ann Dowler and John William Eldridge. She graduated from Winterset High School and taught school until her marriage to Walter L. Abrahams, and most of her life was spent in Madison County. They moved to Des Moines in 1950 where Mr. Abrahams died the following year.
In 1957 she married Kirk Fox, former editor of Successful Farming magazine. They lived in Des Moines until his death in 1968 when Mrs. Fox moved to Simi, California, where she made her home with her daughter and son in law, Mr. and Mrs. Homer D. Hobson, III and their son, Michael.
Mrs. Fox had just arrived in Des Moines for an extended vacation during which she planned to visit friends and relatives in Iowa, Wisconsin and Washington, D.C., when she fell and broke her hip. She had been a patient at Mercy hospital for about a month when complications developed, causing her death.
She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Audree E. Clark of Silver Springs, Maryland; four children; Dean Abrahams of Phoenix, Arizona; Muriel A. Porter of Des Moines; Annice Hobson of Simi, California; and Don Abrahams of Mesa, Arizona. She had ten grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.
Mrs. Fox was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Winterset and later in Des Moines, and was active in many church organizations.
Services for Mrs. Fox were held at Dunn Funeral Home in Des Moines on Monday, May 26, with the Reverend Dean Olson of First Baptist Church, Des Moines, officiating. Interment was at Winterset Cemetery.
