Marilyn Joan Martens, 49, of Des Moines, died of a heart ailment Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001 at her home. Services were held Jan. 20 at Zion Lutheran Church in Dexter, with burial at Dexter Cemetery.

Marilyn Martens was born June 2, 1951 to Eugene and Anna Lenore (Scar) Martens in Dexter and moved to Des Moines 25 years ago. She graduated from Earlham High School in 1969, then attended Concordia Teachers College in Nebraska. She then transferred to Cedar Rapids Community College and earned an associated degree in occupational therapy. She was an occupational therapy assistant with Broadlawns Medical Center for 20 years. She was a member of Polk County Republicans, Mount Olive Lutheran Church, and the Sweet Adeline women's choir in Des Moines. She enjoyed sewing.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

She is survived by her father, Eugene Martens of Earlham; a sister, Susan Griffith of Hunstville, Ala.; and a brother, Steve Martens of Dexter.

(Marilyn grew up on a farm in Penn Township, Madison County, Iowa.)
