April 2000Edith Irene Cole Mills, 87, of Earlham died of a stroke, Sunday, April 2, 2000 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Services were April 5 at the Earlham United Methodist Church. Burial was at the Earlham Cemetery.
Edith Irene Cole Mills, daughter of Ernest E. and Eva Linville Cole, was born Feb. 8, 1913 on a farm near Malvern. In 1916 the family moved to Emerson.
She attended Emerson Public School and graduated in 1929. She attended Nebraska State Teachers College in Peru, Neb. and graduated from Drake University in 1969. She taught 20 years in the Iowa school system. She enjoyed music and was an accomplished pianist. Gardening, canning and quilting were her other pastimes.
On Oct. 16, 1942 she married C. Dale Mills. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and active in the U.M.W.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Ruby Williams.
She is survived by her husband, Dale and four children: Lorraine and husband, Gary, of Mesa, Ariz., Linda Rueber and husband, Darrell, of Winterset; John Mills of Earlham; Mary Hopkins and husband, Stephen, of St. Paul, Minn.; six grandchildren: Doug Barr of Denver, Colo., Steve Barr of Aspen, Colo., Janelle Rueber and Michelle Rueber of Clive, Isaac Hopkins and Andrew Hopkins of St. Paul, Minn.; one great-grandchild, Madison Nicole Barr; one step-brother, Edwin Grayson of Red Oak; other family and friends.
