Katherine Cunningham, Winterset

Katherine J. Cunningham, 92, of Winterset died of multiple organ failure Nov. 5, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday Nov. 8, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset with Msgr. Steven Orr officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.

Katherine Cunningham was born Feb. 23, 1909, in rural Madison County to O. E. "Jake" and Bessie Gladys (Thompson) Harrell. A 1926 graduate of Winterset High School, she also attended Clark College and Drake University. She married John E. Cunningham on July 24, 1929, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset. A lifetime resident of Madison County, she was a farm wife for over 40 years and a retired healthcare provider for Madison County Memorial Hospital area nursing homes. She also was an independent contractor for 25 years. Katherine had been a member of several local bridge clubs (over 60 years), Progressive Study Club, Rotary Ann, Kappa Alpha Theta (president), Madison County Historical Society, St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset, Altar Society, Madison County Hospital Guild and Grey Ladies. She also had been a local Red Cross volunteer.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary Katherine Conley (husband Jerry) of Des Moines; a son John Cunningham of Winterset; and a grandson.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Madison County Historical Society or the Madison County Bridge Restoration Fund.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset.
