St. Charles, March 30, (Special) –
Mrs. L. W. Lynch received a message last Saturday morning telling of the death of her sister, Alta Vanscoy at Clarinda, where she was taken about two months ago, hoping the medical care she would receive there would help her condition caused by high blood pressure and heart trouble. She was up and around most of the time she was there, being confined to her bed only a couple of days before her death.
H. F. Reed drove to Clarinda Saturday morning bringing the body to her home and the funeral service was held at the Methodist church Monday afternoon. Her pastor, Rev. Mitchell, preached the sermon.
She was 58 years of age and had lived in St. Charles many years attending all church services as long as her health would permit.
Surviving are her aged father, Joe Vanscoy and sisters, Mrs. Lena Lynch, Mrs. Laura Fowler, Mrs. Meta Bradshaw and Mrs. Vesta Killiam; several nephews and nieces and a big circle of friends who sympathize with the bereaved.
She was laid to rest in the St. Charles cemetery beside her mother, who preceded her in death last September.

Mary Alta, oldest daughter of Joseph and Arah Jane O’Neal Vanscoy was born near New Virginia, Iowa, April 7, 1873, and died at the State Hospital at Clarinda, at 8:30 A. M., Saturday, March 21, 1931, aged 57 years, 11 months and 14 days.
She was preceded in death by her mother, who passed on September 10, 1930, also by one brother and two sisters. She leaves to mourn her departure her aged father, four sisters- Mrs. Laura Fowler, Mrs. Ona Lynch, Mrs. Metta Bradshaw and Mrs. Vesta Killam, all of St. Charles, a number of nephews and nieces and many friends.
Alta grew to womanhood near New Virginia, later moving to Woodburn, Iowa. She came to St. Charles with her parents twenty-nine years ago. She spent practically all her life at the parental home, where she was an affectionate and helpful daughter so long as physical and mental health permitted.
She had been in poor health for a number of years, gradually failing as the months went by. She was quite poorly at the time of her mother’s death and her condition finally became such it was thought best on January 17, 1931, to take her to the hospital at Clarinda, where the end came. According to a letter received Saturday, she had been in her usual health until just the last few days.
Alta was a member of the Methodist church, having joined the church at Mt. Tabor, near New Virginia, at the age of 13. She later transferred her membership to Woodburn and then to St. Charles. She loved the church and its various activities and so long as health would permit was always present at Sunday school, at both morning and evening worship and at the mid-week service. Time after time when the call was given in Sunday school for those to stand who had not been absent during the quarter, Alta would rise to her feet. It was nothing unusual for her to be present every Sunday during the year. For years she sang in the church choir, attended Epworth League, testifying by her presence to her live for and interest in the work of the church. She was a great student of the bible, having read it entirely through several times.
Once more the family circle has been broken, another chair is vacant in the home, but we have the assurance, if we are faithful to our Lord as she was faithful, we will meet again some day. She has gone to her eternal home, where we feel sure she was greeted with the Master’s, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things, enter thou into the joy of the Lord.”
Funeral services were held at the St. Charles M. E. Church, Monday afternoon, March 23, with interment in the cemetery southwest of town.
