Steven Ray Junkin, 45, of Escondido, Calif., died of a heart ailment at his home on Sept. 17, 1997. Graveside memorial services were Sept. 24 at Earlham Cemetery with Pastor Mike Evans officiating the interment of the cremains. Military rites were provided by American Legion Post #158 of Earlham, and Post #419 of Dexter.

He was born in Winterset on April 15, 1952 to Franklin Junkin and Libby Findley. He graduated from high school in 1970 and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam and was later stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany. He married Jill Maureen Toler in 1973, and retired from the military in 1977. He worked as a mail handler and letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Surviving relatives include his mother of Punta Gorda, Fla.; his wife, Kathy Junkin of Escondido, Calif.; one brother, Jim Junkin of Raymore, Mo.; five sisters, Linda Humphreys of Punta Gorda, Fla., Tonye Nye of Punta Gorda, Fla., Anne Eddy of Clayton, N.C., Pat Cornelius of Minneapolis, Minn., and Jeanne Gilmore of Earlham.
