C. J. YOUNG PASSES AWAY

Long Time Resident of Madison County Dies Suddenly

Cassius J. Young, one of the pioneer residents of Madison county, died at his home in Saint Charles on Monday afternoon.

He suffered from an attack of influenza last week but was not regarded as seriously ill. Death came suddenly from a weakened heart condition. Mr. Young’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Young, were early settlers in Ohio township, and he was born on the old Ohio township homestead May 23, 1861. With the exception of nine years in which he lived on a farm east of St. Charles in Warren county, he lived all of his life in Madison county. He was married to Miss Laura M. Weede, May 23, 1895, and they went to housekeeping in the Broadhorn neighborhood where they lived 9 years. They came to a farm just east of St. Charles in 1905, and moved to St. Charles in February, 1919. He was justice of the peace of South township eight years, and was elected last fall for the 5th time.

Surviving members of the family are his wife, Laura Weede Young, and a foster son, Oscar Meader. Funeral services are being held at the home this afternoon (Thursday, January 29th) at 2 o’clock and burial will be made at Saint Charles.

Many readers of the Madisonian will sorrow in the passing of a friend and neighbor, who was greatly admired for his sterling character and kindly interest in his fellow men. And a still larger number will miss his regular contribution as Saint Charles correspondent. He was a regular news contributor for 35 years. In spite of his illness this week, he sent his weekly letter and in it recorded the fact that he was suffering much pain but was encouraged to believe that his illness had passed the critical stage.

Cassius James Young

Cassius James Young was born May 23, 1861, in a log cabin on a farm in Ohio township, Madison county, Iowa, about one mile east of where the town of Truro now stands. He was the fifth child of J. J. and Sarah A. Young and was one of a family of twelve children. In early manhood he was converted and united with the church. May 28, 1895 he was united in marriage to Miss Laura M. Weede. To this union one son was born who died at birth. After his marriage he transferred his church membership from the M. E. church in Truro to the United Presbyterian church in St. Charles, with his wife and was a happy, willing worker, serving as trustee for many years.

Over forty years ago he was stricken with sclatic rheumatism and later heart trouble and has been greatly handicapped by ill health but in spite of all his afflictions he was ambitious and a brave and patient sufferer, always ready to help somebody by a kind word or acts or smile, and was by nature a cheerful, sunny disposition.

He has served 8 years as Justice of the Peace and was re-elected again last fall and had begun the work for another 2 years. He is held in high esteem by many who have had business dealings with him. He has been correspondent for the Winterset Madisonian for about 36 years and took delight in his work. He was a kind and loving husband and loved his home and quiet life. His request was to have a home funeral. He chose the text: 2nd Cor., 5th chapter, 1st verse, and selected his pallbearers. He died at his home Monday, January 26, 1931, about 3 p.m. of flu, after an illness of about five days, aged 69 years, 8 months and 3 days. He leaves to mourn his departure his loving wife, 6 sisters, Mrs. Frances Musselman, of Truro, Mrs. Elmyra Mann of DeWitt, Mo., Mrs. Laura Habenicht of Cedar Falls, Mrs. Mary Wilson of Red Oak, Mrs. Lura Foreman of Winterset, Mrs. Violet Foreman of Red Rock, Oklahoma, three brothers, Thomas of Rodgers, Arkansas, Mortimore, of Vict, Oklahoma, and Elsworth of near Truro, and his foster son, Oscar Maeder, wife and two sons, James and Edward of Oak Park, Illinois, and many other relatives and friends.

The following verse which he pasted on the book of Psalms expressed the sentiment and purpose of his life:

In full and glad surrender
I give myself to Thee,
Thine utterly and only
And evermore to be,
O Son of God, who lovest me,
I will be Thine alone.
And what I have and am, Lord,
Shall henceforth be Thine own.

Funeral services were held in the home Thursday at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. G. E. Carnahan. A large crowd of relatives and friends were present. Relatives from out of town were Mrs. Frances Musselman, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Musselman, Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Musselman, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Musselman, Mrs. Velma Musselman, Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Young, Mabel and Lloyd, Mrs. Mary Wilson and daughter, Myrtle of Red Oak, Mrs. Liva Foreman, son Walter, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Foreman, Mr. and Mrs. George Pilmer of Winterset, Mr. and Mrs. Will Pilmer of Brookings, South Dakota, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Dyre, Kenneth and Ruth, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Dyre, Mrs. Leila McCulley of Indianola, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Weede, Nancy Jean and Priscilla, Mrs. Faith Herman, Mrs. Maggie King, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Carlston and Mrs. Leslie Herman of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. O. J. Maeder, James and Edward of Oak Park, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Martin, northwest of St. Charles. Friends from a distance were Ed. M. Smith and daughter, Mrs. John Gorman of Winterset, Mrs. Mary Baldridge, Mrs. Tris, Mrs. Klumb, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Preston of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Henry, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Coulter, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Haas, Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Brafford of Indianola.
