Page 1MRS. J. W. CROSSLEY, Pioneer Resident Dies
Mrs. J. W. Crossley, a pioneer resident of Madison county, died at her home on West Court avenue, early Wednesday morning, March 9th, at the age of 83 years. Mrs. Crossley had been in poor health for serveral years and became critically ill, with bronchitis and complications, over two weeks ago.
Cynthia Jane Hardy was a daughter of James William and Hannah Hardy, and was born October 15, 1848 at Mount Blanchard, Ohio. Her parents came to this county, when she was a little girl of six years, in 1854, and they first located on a farm near St. Charles. A few months later they homesteaded on a farm in Crawford township, a short distance west of what is now the John Kelleher residence, on Primary No. 2, between Patterson and Bevington. Here she spent her girlhood, and following the Civil War was married to John W. Crossley. For several years they lived on different farms in that neighborhood, and then purchased a part of the farm, which was their home for fifty years. This place was a half mile south of the Hardy place. Here they raised their family, and here they celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary,May 14, 1918. In the fall of 1920 they purchased what was known as the Shriver residence one block west of the public library and this has since been their home. Mr. Crossley died in October 1926.
Mr. amd Mrs. Crossley were the parents of seven children, five of whom survive them: James Judson Crossley, of Portland, Mrs. Ed M. Smith, John I, and Clyde C. Crossley and Mrs. E. H. Miles of Winterset. A daughter Cora died in 1898 and another daughter, Hannah died in infancy. Mrs. Crossley also leaves fourteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Her brothers and sisters have preceded her in death.
Funeral services are being held at the Patterson Methodist church, Friday afternoon, March 11th, at 2 o'clock and burial will be in the family lot, in Montpelier cemetery.

A group of relatives and friends were here last Friday to attend the funeral services of Mrs. Jane Crossley. A number of Winterset people also drove to Patterson to attend the services, which were held at 2 o'clock in the Methodist church there. The Rev. A. E. Keast of Winterset conducted the services.
The people who were from out of the county who attended were Newt Bell, and Mr. and Mrs. Courtney Couch and daughter, Mrs. Lou Houston, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Thornburg, Grant Whitmore, George Bettie and Earl Olmstead of Des Moines.

Cynthia Jane Hardy, Daughter of James W. and Hannah Hardy, was born October 15, 1848 near Mt. Blanchard, Ohio, came to Iowa in the age of six years. They settled on a farm in Crawford township near Patterson and which is now known as the Crosslet Farm. She was one of four children, all of whom preceded her in death.
She was married to J. W. Crossley May 14, 1868, Mr. Crossley having passed on October 22, 1926, having lived together fifty-six years, almost continuously on the same farm until 1920 when they moved to Winterset, at which place her death occurred March 9, 1932 at the age of 83 years, 4 months and 23 days.
There were seven children born to this couple, James J. Crossley of Portland, Oregon; Mrs. E. H. Miles, and Clyde C. Crossley of Winterset; Hannah who died in infancy and Cora who passed away in 1898 at the age of 21 years. She also leaves fifteen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and a host of friends and relatives to mourn her loss. She was a member of the Methodist church of this place since her girlhood.
