Earle Canfield, Des Moines

Earle L. Canfield, 81, of Des Moines died of a heart ailment June 17, 2000, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.

The body was cremated. Memorial services were held Wednesday, June 21, at Park Avenue Presbyterian Church in Des Moines.

Earle Canfield had lived in Des Moines all of his life. He was principal at Winterset High School in the mid-1940s. He also directed the high school band during that time. He was a professor of mathematics at Drake University and also dean of the graduate division before retiring. He was a member of Kiwanis, Masonic Lodge, Abraham Lincoln High School Alumni Hall of Fame, Mathematical Association of America and Park Avenue Presbyterian Church, where he had served as an elder and choir member.

He is survived by his wife, Betty (Fosher) Canfield; two sons, Irving of Woodburn, Ore., and Ward of Chicago, Ill.; a daughter, Marcia Kelly of Hudson, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Martha (Fosher) Hammans of Winterset; and six grandchildren.
