IRA C. WALKER Passed Away Monday, Was Early Settler in County.

On last Monday afternoon, passed away one of the pioneers of northeast Madison county. Since coming to that locality, almost sixty years ago, the name of Ira Walker has been familiar to the men, women and children who lived in Jefferson, Lee and Union townships. Everybody liked him and trusted him. Naturally, of a very mild and amiable disposition, there was a sunshine and cheer wherever he went. He was also prosperous, and acquired one of the finest farms along North river, and by his industry and thrift, was enabled to give each of his numerous family quite a start in the world. He not only looked after his family, but had the good of the neighborhood at heart. He was chiefly instrumental in the formation of the congregation for religious worship at the nearby school house, about a quarter of a century ago, and this resulted in the erection of the Jefferson U. B. Church which was dedicated Aug. 21, 1904. He was a loyal member of that church until his death. Owing to the infirmities of age, he removed from the old homestead to Winterset in 1901. During the past six months, he was confined to his home by an incurable ailment.

Ira C. Walker was born in Gallia county, Ohio, Jan. 10, 1827; when three years old, his parents took him to Hancock county, Indiana, where he grew to manhood; was married to Lucy Ann Edmonson in 1850. With his family, he moved to Madison county in 1854, settling near where the four corners of Union, Jefferson, Crawford and Lee meet. The home dwelling was in Lee, and still remains there, being the home of his youngest son, Seth Walker.

Those of the original family who remain, besides the wife and mother are William F. Walker of Des Moines, James A. Walker of Commerce, Mrs. A. D. Fletcher of this county; Mrs. J. W. Crumbaker of Lorimor, Mrs. O. W. Alexander, Mrs. Clyde Addy and Seth F. Walker, of Madison county. Four children, two boys and two girls, passed away in years gone by. He leaves three brothers in Indiana and one brother and two sisters in Kansas.

The funeral services will occur tomorrow. A short service will be held at the home at eight o'clock, and at eleven o'clock, the final services will be held at the Jefferson U. B. church, conducted by Rev. E. W. Curtis of Des Moines, a former pastor.
