Obituary Notice

Roseman-Died, in Webster township Madison county, Iowa on April 13th, 1888, Charles T., eldest son of Mr. And Mrs. E. M. Roseman, aged 28 years, 6 months and 12 days.

He was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, September 30, 1859. His parents settled in Madison county in the fall of 1864. Charles was a good boy from tender childhood, an inoffensive and harmless playmate, possessing a mild, sweet temperament; was a loved brother and an obedient, faithful son. At the early age of 12 years he embraced faith in a Savior’s love and was happily converted and joined the M. E. church, remaing a faithful member till death.

From early life he was rather feeble in physical health and grew up to the age of manhood unable to battle with life by hard toil and labor. In the fall of 1883 he attended school at Simpson College, Indianola, hoping in this way to prepare himself for life of usefulness in teaching, but after teaching a short time he had to abandon it on account of his health. Staying with his parents the rest of his life, giving in and out amount his friends when able, Charlie was a model Christian young male, faithful in the Sunday school, in the prayer and class meeting, in the study of the Bible and religious reading.

In the fall of 1886 the hand of disease was again laid hardly upon him in the way of an affection of the lungs. He was so as to be up at intervals, yet suffered a great deal of the time. He bore it all with great patience and Christian resignath on. The last six weeks of his life he was confined to his bed all the time, growing rapidly worse and becoming weaker in body, yet his mind was clear and strong till the last moment. The day before his death he spoke of Bunyan traveling through life and coming to the river of death. His mother being at his bed-side, said Charlie “ Jesus will meet you there and lead you safely over the river.” His countenance then brightening he said: “Praise Gold! Of how light the room is! Oh how bright! God is here; God is everywhere. Oh how beautiful God is in nature! God is all in all. I will never die, I may change, but I will never, never die. I am just beginning to live. Oh what a blessing to tell everyone that may come into the house.” He then wished his father to raise him up saying, “ I am going Home”

These were his last words, and at three o’clock on the morning of April 13th his happy spirit took its flight to dwell with God. Father, mother, your loved boy Charlie is gone, but oh what a comfort is his triumphant death. Brothers, sisters, walk in his footsteps; teachers, schoolmates and associates imitate his Christian life, then all will be well.

On Saturday, April 14th, the funeral services took place at the home, conducted by the Rev. C. D. Mabee, of the Winterset circuit, a very able and impressive sermon for the words, “ I am the resurrection and the life,” after which the body was conveyed to the cemetery followed by a large concourse of friends and neighbors, and laid in its last resting place.

“O Death where is thy sting, O Grave where is thy victory?”

In conclusion, we say our aim has not been to give undue praise or eulogy to the dead. Only hoping that all who read this article may live the life and die the death of Charlie Roseman.

Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep,
From which none ever wakes to weep.
A calm and undisturbed repose,
Unbroken by the last of foes.
