Paul Barger, Waterloo

Paul B. Barger, 93, of Friendship Village in Waterloo, died of natural causes Sept. 17, 1995 at the Covenant Medical Center. Memorial services were Sept. 20 at the First United Methodist Church in Waterloo. The body was cremated. The Rev. James F. Hanke officiated the services.

He was born Nov. 25, 1901 in Audubon to Lewis and Alice du Steere Barger. He married Mildred E. Barry on March 11, 1927 in Winterset. He had received a bachelor's degree in animal husbandry from Iowa State University and had served as county Extension agent for Madison County. He worked for KWWL as their farm reporter and also wrote the Waterloo Courier's gardening column from 1950 to 1992. He was very active in Waterloo's Rotary Club and Extension committees. He was active in 4-H programs and served as superintendent of the National Dairy Castle Congress Show, where there is a building named after him. He received the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Distinguished Service Award in 1950 and was elected president of the national Association of County Agricultural Agents in 1963. In 1955 he received the Iowa State University Alumni Key Award; in 1962 he received the Life Long Services in Agriculture Award from Iowa State University; and in 1963 he received a faculty citation from the Iowa State University alumni Association. He had also served as a corporal in the U.D. Army.

He was preceded in death by one son; one daughter; one brother; and two sisters.

Surviving relatives include his wife; one son, Samuel L. Barger of Reno, Nev.; one daughter, Nancy Barger Michel of Sacramento, Calif.; and nine grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
