Earl Schalkle, 91, died Thursday of Alzheimer’s disease at Bethesda Care Center in Winterset. Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the first Presbyterian Church of Earlham, of which he was a member, with burial at Earlham Cemetery.
Schalkle, son of A.B. and Janet Hunter Schalkle, was born in Coal City, Ill, in 1998 (1898) and moved in 1909 at the age of eleven to Earlham, where he owned a men’s clothing store most of his life. He was on the board of directors of the Earlham Savings Bank, the Stuart First State Bank, the Earlham Museum and the Pioneer Place, a local housing developer. He was member of the Masonic Lodge, the Lions Club, and the Earlham Business Men’s association.
On September 27, 1923, he married (married) Lucile Junkin.
Surviving are a daughter, Margaret Sue Wallace of Marion; and two grandchildren, Scott Wallace and Linda Clifton both of Marion and a sister-in-law, Gayle Junkin of Earlham.
