Bernard Balch Death Reported

Winterset native Bernard Russell Balch died Sunday, Aug. 16, in Ann Arbor, Mich., at the age of 59.

He was born April 30, 1922, in Winterset to Harry and Beulah Wilkinson Balch. On July 17, 1948, he married Elizabeth Jane Johnston.

A World War II veteran, Mr. Balch graduated from the University of Maryland and received his law degree from Northwestern University. He practiced law in Waterloo until 1960 and served two terms in the Iowa House of Representatives. In 1960 he joined the Ford Motor Co and from 1968 until his retirement in 1980 was on the staff of Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn, Mich.

Survivors include his wife; son Russell of Washington, D.C.; three daughters, Nancy Roberts of Ann Arbor, Beverly Bornschein of Mount Pleasant, Mich., and Jennifer E. Balch of Ann Arbor; one granddaughter; and one brother Clyde W. of Birmingham, Ala.

Memorial services were conducted at the First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor on Wednesday, Aug. 19 with interment held at the Winterset Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Association or the Epilepsy Association of America.
