Grace Atkins, Winterset

Grace Atkins, 81, of Winterset died of lung cancer March 26, 2002, at her residence.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 29, at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset with the Rev. Robert Barrick officiating. Burial was at the Winterset Cemetery.

Grace Atkins was born Dec. 6, 1920 to Joseph and Ocein (Mead) Cooper of Peru. She was a graduate of Winterset High School and the American Institute of Business in Des Moines. Following her graduation from AIB, Grace worked for the telephone office in Winterset for a year and one-half. She married John M. Atkins on June 7, 1941 in Wright City, Mo. She and her husband returned to Winterset in 2000. They previously resided in Arkansas. She was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, five brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by four sons, John M. Atkins of Columbus, Neb., Thomas D. Atkins of Bartlesville, Okla., Richard Atkins (wife Chere) of Denton, Neb., and James Atkins (wife Sharon) of Rantoul, Ill.; a daughter, Sheila Newlin of Tulsa, Okla.; a sister, Bellezora Lucas (husband Clarence) of Winterset; four grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the First United Methodist Church or Middle River Hospice both of Winterset.
