Van Meter Special Nov. 4 - HERMAN E. MARQUARDT Dies

Herman E. Marquardt passed away at his home in Jefferson township, abut noon, on Wednesday, October 30th, after a long illness. Mr. Marquardt, who was 82 years old, was one of the long time residents of this viciniy. He was born in Nenemkirchin, Pomerania, Germany and when four years old came with his parents to the United States. They settled in Clayton county, Iowa, where he grew to young manhood. They came to Madison county in 1873, and located on a fam in the northern part of Jefferson township.

The deceased received his early education in the schools of Clayton county. However, most of his education was acquired by constant reading and study of both secular and sacred subjects. He joined the Lutheran church in Clayton county, and upon moving to Madison county, he transferred his membership to the Trinity Lutheran church in Jefferson township. He was an acive worker for many years, and has served as elder. He was also a charter member of the Farmers Mutual Insurance association of Madison county, and has always been a director of the company.

On March 21, 1886 he was married to Miss Katie Storck of Delaware county. The young couple moved to the present family home, where they have since resided. They were the parents of six children, but one daughter and one son died in early childhood.

He leaves his wife, and four sons, David, Oscar, George and Alfred, all of this vicinity. He also leaves four grandchildren: Fern, Walter, Vera, and Helen.

The funeral service was held at the Trinity Lutheran Church, on Friday, November first, with the pastor, the Rev. C. Lilie in charge and burial was in the Lutheran cemetery. Six of his nephews served as pallbearers: August and Carl Marquardt, Paul and Walter Storck and Albert and Roy Burger.

Among those from a distance who came back to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Storck of Marion and Martin Cadding and John Van den Hamm of Ireton.
