J. H. Dow Passes Away
Well Known Citizen of Winterset Dies after
Long Illness

J. H. Dow passed away at his home on west Washington street on last Friday evening after a long illness from a complication of kidney and pulmonary trouble. He never possessed a very robust constution and about one year ago his health failed all together. He made a heroic struggle for life, but against great odds and the best medical skill and skilful nursing could only prolong his life and lesson his suffering.

Mr. Dow came to Winterset with his brother about twenty years ago to engage in the grain business. He afterward returned to Anawan, Illinois and three years later returned here and continued in the grain business until 1900, when the elevator was sold. Mr. Dow afterward bought the Huston farm in Lincoln township which he continued to operate until last year, when he leased the farm and was intending to go west in the hope of improving his health, when illness overtook him. He was forty five years of age and leaves a wife, one daughter and one son; also one brother, J. L. Dow of Davenport, and two sisters, Mrs. Chas. Pasche of Davenport, and Mrs. Hugh M. Schuler of Des Moines.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Judd of the Episcopal church, were held at the home on Monday afternoon and the body was taken to Davenport for burial.

Josiah Dow Passes Away

Josiah H. Dow died at his home on West Washington street Thursday evening of tuberculosis. The funeral occurred Monday afternoon at the residence, Rev. Allen Judd, of Des Moines, priest in charge of the Winterset Episcopal church, paying a splendid and touching tribute to the man all Winterset loved. The body was taken to Davenport, his boyhood home, the same evening for interment.

Josiah Dow, familiarly known as “Si,” took charge of the elevator in Winterset owned by the Dow Milling company, of Davenport about twenty-five years ago and operated it with his brothers for several years. After it was sold he purchased a farm in Lincoln township and gave his attention to stock raising but living in Winterset. He was married to Miss May Babcock in 1894. Two children, Margaret, seventeen, and John, eight years old, were born to them. Mr. Dow would have been forty-five years old today.

Two years ago Mr. Dow’s health commenced to fail but it was not known to his friends that he had tuberculosis until a few months ago. A more popular man never lived in Winterset and his death was learned by his wide acquaintances in the county with genuine sorrow.
