Prominent Citizen Dies Saturday. Served In Civil War.
James Welch, veteran of the civil War, died Saturday at his home on First Avenue after a long and lingering illness of diabetes. He had been in poor health for several months and was confined to the house three or four weeks preceding his death.
“Jim” Welch had as many friends as any man that ever lived in the city. He was one of its oldest residents and never had an enemy. Quiet, genial and unobtrusive, his long residence in the city and on his Douglas farm gave him the friendship of nearly everyone in the town. His death, while expected by his friends caused them sincere sorrow.
