Thursday’s Register of last week contained an account of the drowning at Long Beach, Washington, of Miss Nettie Boies, and Mr. William Steel, whom it speaks of as son of the postmaster of Portland. We are informed that the young man was, in fact, a son of Mr. J. G. Steel, formerly of Winterset, and that the gentleman spoken of as his father was a relative with whom he made his home.

Since the above was written a copy of the Spokane Chronicle comes confirming the sad intelligence. The unfortunate bathers were swept out to sea by a huge wave, assisted by the undertow. At last accounts the bodies had not been recovered.

The Chronicle says: “Mr. Steel was an estimable young man, well known and well thought of. He has a large number of acquaintances in this city, who will regret to learn of his untimely end.”

Coordinator's note: Contrary to the statement above, the Des Moines Register article says the bodies were recovered.
