William B. Hess of Winterset, a well-known retired farmer, died last Wednesday, April 13, 1966, at his home here. He was 84 years of age.
Mr. Hess spent his active life engaged in farming in Madison county. He was a native of Silver Hills, West Virginia, where he was born July 25, 1881, a son of Cassius and Dora Carter Hess.
He was married in December, 1899, in Oklahoma, to Jennie Timmons, who preceded him in death. In 1944 he was married to Nellie Campbell, who survives him.
He was a member of the Ord Christian Union Church.
One son preceded him in death. He is survived by two sons, Dale L. Hess of San Diego, Calif., and Glen W. Hess of Des Moines; a stepson, James Campbell of Ottumwa; a step-daughter, Mrs. Milo Anderson of Stockhart; nine grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; a brother, Omer Hess of Lorimor; and two sisters, Mrs. Molly Watkins and Mrs. Matt Lindsay, both of Des Moines.
Funeral services were held Friday from the Wilson Funeral home, conducted by the Rev. Charles Updike, pastor of the Winterset Foursquare church, assisted by the Rev. Lloyd Knouf. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
