Helen Kelleher, Des Moines

A funeral service was held Monday, July 19, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Winterset for Helen Kelleher, a former Winterset resident who died July 16 of a heart ailment at Mercy Hospital Medical center in Des Moines. She was 85 years old.

Born is Des Moines, she was the daughter of Mathew and Hannah Gibbons Kane.

In 1918 she received a bachelor of science degree in home economics from Iowa State College. The following year she married John J. Kelleher, who died in 1936.

From 1936-56 she operated a farm in Madison county. In 1956 she served as editor of Cappers Farmer magazine. She also served as Director of Madison County Memorial Hospital Association; was recipient of the Merit Achievement Award from the Iowa State Alumni Association; received the Master Farm Homemaker Award from Wallace's Farmer magazine; and was a member of the National Rural Life Conference, the American Home Economics Assn., and Pi Beta Phi. In 1958, she was named to the "Who's Who of American Women."

She also belonged to the Bishop Drumm Guild, Catholic Daughters of America, Iowa League of Women Voters and the Dowling Club and was a member of St. Augustin's Catholic Church in Des Moines.

Surviving Mrs. Kelleher are three sons, John Kelleher of Winterset, Dennis Kelleher of Denver, Colorado and Paul Kelleher of Grand Junction; three daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Bedar of Denver, Mrs. Joan Mitchell of Des Moines and Mrs. Mary Nelson of West Des Moines; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Kelly of Davenport; 31 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Winterset Cemetery.
