October 16, 1924VIGILANTES COME TO WINTERSET MEET
Members of Committee Entertained By Madison County Bankers Association
The Madison county Bankers association will entertain the Vigilante Committee of Madison county today when it comes here for the annual shoot. The men making the two highest scores will go to the state meet at Des Moines which will be held the last week in the month, October 27 and 28.
The Vigilantes Committee, which is patterned after the old time bands of vigilantes, has eighteen members who are employed and furnished guns by the Bankers association. From one to four men in each town in the county are members of the committee. The local men include Charles Christensen, Elmer Orris, Carleton Null and Charles Breeding. The county shoot is in charge of R. A. Breeding and is being held at the rifle range north of Winterset.
_________________________Transcriber's note: A search of the Madison County newspapers for other Vigilante Committee members from 1920 through 1935 only revealed the membership of County Sheriff Robert Breeding in the 1930s.
