The Des Moines Daily News, of last Tuesday has the following account of the holdup of Homer Hyde of this city:
"One of the boldest hold ups in the history of Des Moines occurred Monday evening. H.R. Hyde of Winterset was the victim. He is an agent for the Des Moines Nursery Co. Mr. Hyde was knocked down and robbed at about 5:15 at East Second and Court Avenue. He was dragged into an alley north of Court avenue by his assailants and was not found by the police until 9 p.m.
Mr. Hyde is a large man of about 45 years. He had left his grip at the depot Monday afternoon and spent a few hours looking about the city. He went to the East Side and was returning on Court avenue when he was assaulted by two men. A club or board was probably used. The thugs grabbed hold of Mr. Hyde's coat and arms and dragged him into the alley, where they took off his shoes, presumably to see if valuables were secreted, then went through his pockets. They took $35 in cash, a $45 watch and a $100 diamond ring, also some bank checks that Hyde says amounted to about $50.
Mr. Hyde intended to leave last night for Canton, S.D., on business and his wife is stopping with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gadd of 716 West Sixteenth street. She knew nothing of the assault until noon to-day, when Hyde told her that he was unable to leave for Canton on account of the injuries; as he was cared for at the city jail during last night.
The police have arrested on suspicion of the hold up "Diddy" McDonald and Doug Burns. Hyde expects to be able to prove that these men attacked him, and it is said that the officers have strong evidence to back Hyde up in the charge."
