Edward M. Smith
Senator from Sixteenth district, composed of the counties of Adair and Madison, was born in Jackson county, Iowa, October 31, 1870. His parents moved to a farm in Madison county in 1886. Began teaching school in 1892 between farm seasons. Was county school superintendent 1897 to 1900. In 1899 entered the publishing business as publisher of the Winterset Madisonian, which position he still holds. Was also postmaster at Winterset, Iowa, from April, 1904, to August, 1908. Attended the Dexter Normal college, and Drake university. Married Evalyn Crossley of Patterson, Iowa, on June 1, 1898, of which union they have four children. Is a member of the Presbyterian church, Knights of Pythias, Mason, Des Moines Consistory of Scottish Rite Mason, Za-Ga-Zig Temple and Mystic Shrine.
