John Spence, Jackson twp., farmer, Sec. 14; P.O. Winterset; a native of Scotland; when a youth of sixteen he came alone from Scotland to Henderson county, Illinois; lived there until 1870, when he removed to Madison county, Iowa, where he now resides; Mr. Spence enlisted in the 84th Illinois infantry in 1862; was mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee, and discharged at Springfield, Illinois, in June, 1865; he participated in the following battles: Perry Hill, Stone River, Chicamauga, Lookout Mountain and Mission Ridge; he was with Sherman from Chattanooga until Atlanta was taken; then with General Thomas at Franklin and Nashville; going through the war without furlough or even having been in the hospital, he returned to farming, and now owns 240 acres of land; has served two terms as assessor, and two as trustee.
