John Henkle, Scott twp., farmer, Sec. 11; P.O. Winterset; born in Campbell county, Virginia, August 30, 1819; when seven years of age, his parents removed to East Tennessee, where they lived two years, and then emigrated to Putman county, Indiana, in 1828; while there he learned the trade of tanner and currier, which business he followed until his coming to Iowa; he married Joan Bondurant February 24, 1842; she died April 30, 1850; she left two children: Joseph resides in Deadwood, and Elizabeth, now Mrs. Peter Lynch; he married again to Susanna Guilliams in November, 1853; they emigrated to this county June 8, 1855, and located where he now lives; came in wagon and was on month on the road; his wife died the following July; left one daughter: Surilda, now Mrs. James Goff, living in Putnam county, Indiana; he married again to his present wife in July 1858; her maiden name was Mary M. Moser, a native of Ohio; they have three daughters: Joanna, Katura Andromeda and Minnie F.; owns 160 acres of land.
