November 29, 1928Samuel Wesley Baker, son of Daniel and Fannie Baker, was born in Walnut township, Madison county, Iowa, on March 7, 1855 and made his home with his parents on the farm where he was born. In 1900, he moved with his mother to Winterset, with whom he lived until her death in 1911. Since that time he has made his home with his brother (in-law) and sister, Mr. and Mrs. I. E. T. Wilson, of Winterset, until his death on November 20, 1928. He leaves four brothers and three sisters: W. N. Baker, of Peru; J. S. Baker, of Des Moines, Eldon E. Baker, of Flint, Michigan, Sherman Baker, Mrs. I.E.T. Wilson, and Mrs. George Black of Winterset, and Mrs. S. A. Silliman, of Indianola, besides several nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends.
Sam Barker, as he was always known, always had a kind word for everybody and was always ready to perform some act of kindness for those in need.
Mr. Baker had been a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows for thirty-five years and had always been a very active member. When he was twenty years of age, he was converted and joined the Methodist church.
The funeral was held in the Methodist church Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock. Because of the illness of Rev. Keast, Rev. W.C. Porter, of the United Presbyterian church preached the sermon. The four brothers and two brothers-in-law were the pall bearers. Interment was made in the family plot in the cemetery at Peru. The committal service was read by the officers of Madison County I.O.O.F., lodge No. 132.
