Marion Russel Alcott

Marion Russel Alcott was born 08 Jul 1894 in South Township, Madison County, Iowa, near the town of St. Charles, son of William Asbury Alcott* & Anna Mathitable Ray. He grew up in rural Madison County and about 1914, the family moved to Minnesota.

Marion was married on 17 Nov 1915 at Cass County, Minnesota to Millie Arlina Scott (b. 18 Aug 1895 at Shell Rock, Butler, Iowa), daughter of Frederick Arthur and Mary S. (Mettler) Scott. She and baby Myron Alcott died in childbirth in 1917 and are buried in the Young Cemetery, Young, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.

On 21 Oct 1918, Marion enlisted as a Private in the US Army, serving in the 322nd Supply Train Regiment, 87th Division. He was honorably discharged 14 Dec 1918.

Marion next married Helen Luetta Henkle on 10 Nov 1920 in Cedar Rapids, Linn, Iowa. Helen was born 01 Aug 1902 at Garrison, Benton, Iowa, the daughter of Oscar Asbury and Matilda Mahitable (Reifenstahl) Henkle. After marriage, they went to Hubbard County, Minnesota where Marion worked in a logging camp on East Crooked Lake. Their son Harold Ellis Alcott was born in the logging camp at East Crooked Lake in March 1922.

Before mid-1923, they removed to Garrison, Benton County, Iowa, where Lillian Luetta Alcott was born. They had three more children while living in Garrison, Iowa; Ruby Faye, Alfred Mearl, who was stillborn, & Florence Evelyn Alcott. Helen Alcott died 10 Mar 1942 (age 39) at Garrison, Iowa from heart problems and is buried in the Garrison Cemetery.

Five years after Helen's death, Marion married a third time to Mabel Elizabeth Hale at Iowa City, Johnson, Iowa on 22 Dec 1947. Mabel was born 02 Sep 1894 near Independence, Buchanan, Iowa, the daughter of Frank Z. and Lillian (Wilbur) Hale. Marion and Mabel had no children together. Mabel had been married twice before. First to Harry Bern by whom she had, Russell Harry Bern, and second to J. Boyd Atchison by whom she had Howard, Elizabeth, and Herbert Atchison. Marion died from cancer on 06 Dec 1959 at Iowa City and is buried in the Garrison Cemetery. Mabel subsequently had a stroke and went to live in Methwick Manor in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She passed away at Cedar Rapids on 18 Aug 1966 and is also buried in the Garrison Cemetery.

* Marion's father was born an "Allcock" and remained so through the 1895 census. Subsequently, many documents contain the name "Alcox" and finally he settled on "Alcott" under which he is buried.
